Lighting the Way with Here4Peers
Nov 25, 2024
My name is Amneet, and I’m the Program Coordinator for Here4Peers at CMHA, Vancouver-Fraser.
My journey with CMHA-VF began in 2017. I was in grade 12 and part of the Vancouver school district’s pilot program of Here4Peers.
Mental Health wasn’t a topic that was talking about when I was growing up or in my elementary school’s curriculum. The transition between elementary to high school was challenging – so when I saw the opportunity to be the person I never had growing up I had to jump on it. Little did I know that my high school volunteerism would result in a career down the line.
I come from a South Asian background, and mental health is not discussed within my community because of harsh stigmatization. Yet, I find that it is within such communities that the need to discuss mental health is paramount.
Here4Peers core principles are to educate youth on mental health basics, raise awareness of mental health stigma, and discuss various mental health coping mechanisms and resources available to youth.
For me, this program was more than just a simple workshop; it has facilitated my self-development, improved my relationships, and allowed me to serve and better my community. It taught me empathy, helped me find my voice and made me a more open and confident person.
Here4Peers allowed me to grow as an individual and achieve great things. I have experienced countless opportunities thanks to Here4Peers, many of which I never thought possible. After graduating from university, I knew that I wanted to do more for mental health promotion in Greater Vancouver. On my first day at CMHA-VF, I knew I was joining an organization filled with amazing individuals who are passionate about making their communities a better place.
My work is important to me because I have experienced firsthand what this program can do for the mental health and development of the youth in our region. I want to inspire the next generation, give them the opportunities I was afforded, and more, to help them shine bright every day.
One thing that will always stick with me is a quote from my keynote speak for Here4Peers at a mental health conference,
“Buy a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man how to fish, and you feed him for life”. Just the same, if you teach a child how to recognize when they need help, you are teaching them how to ask. And it’s always okay to ask for help.” These principles have helped me in all aspects of my life – in my career, as a community coach, as a friend, as a sister and as a daughter.”
Amneet is inspiring the next generation to embrace their mental health journey, just as she did. Her work ensures that young people not only understand the importance of mental health but also have access to the resources and support they need to thrive.
Your support can amplify the impact of Here4Peers and other crucial programs. By donating today, you’ll provide the tools for youth to recognize when they need help and empower them to ask for it.
Make a gift today and light the way for someone in need.
